Story of Pitru Paksha

Legends say Karna, son of Kunti, was a great philanthropist who donated wealth but never food. When he reached heaven he found plenty of riches but no food. He prayed to Yamaraja, who sent him back to earth for 14 days to feed Brahmins and the poor. These 14 days are observed as Mahalaya Paksha, or Pitru Paksha. Offerings made during this period are believed to benefit all departed souls.
