Those who go to Rameshwar and seek my blessings shall always reside in shivloka

The temple’s typical Dravidian style structure built by the Pandya’s in 12th century. It is the most notable historic landmark of the town. There are two lingams inside the temple complex. One linga was built by Goddess Sita and the other by Lord Hanuman.  The temple complex also posses separate temples for Lord Rama, Goddess Sita and Hanuman.

The legend is taken from great epic Ramayana. After killing Ravana, Lord Rama reached Rameshwaram with Maa Sita and Vanara sena. Lord Ram wanted to cleanse his dosha of killing Ravana who was a Brahmin. For this he wished to pray to Lord Shiva and seek forgiveness. But lord Ram could not find any shiv lingam at Rameshwaram.  To get the lingam Lord Hanuman went to Kashi but he could not return in time. On the other hand, Lord Rama and Goddess Sita were getting late for the pooja. Hence Goddess Sita built a small lingam of the sand and they began the pooja. When hanumanji returned, Lord Rama installed that lingam and named it as Kasi Viswanatha.
