Pitru Paksha means "the fortnight of the forefathers". It is the time when ancestors are believed to visit the earth, and performing Shradh and Brahman Bhoj in these days is considered extremely important. It is believed that Yamaraja allows departed souls to come down and receive the offerings of their descendants.

Story of Pitru Paksha

Legends say Karna, son of Kunti, was a great philanthropist who donated wealth but never food. When he reached heaven he found plenty of riches but no food. He prayed to Yamaraja, who sent him back to earth for 14 days to feed Brahmins and the poor. These 14 days are observed as Mahalaya Paksha, or Pitru Paksha.
