'Deoghar' comprises of two words, Deo and ghar. 'Deo' means Dev (Gods & Goddesses) & 'ghar' meaning abode. Hence Deoghar is the abode of God & Goddesses. It is also known as Baithyanath Dham or Baba Dham.
Deoghar is one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingams & one of the 51 shakti peethas in India. The most important aspect of this temple is that the same shrine of Baidyanath is considered as one of 51 Shakti peethas, where 'yoni peetham' of jyotirlinga itself is considered as the Shakti Peetha.

Adi Shankracharaya praised the divinity of Baithyanath Jyotirlinga through the following verse -
"Poorvothare prajwalika nidhane
sada vasantham girija sametham
srivaidyanatham thamaham namam"
According to Hindu scripts, Ravana worshipped Lord Shiva at the place where the temple exists today. Ravana worshipped Shiva at Deoghar to get the boons that he would use later on to increase terror in the world. During the pooja ritual, Ravana offered his ten heads to Shiva one after another as a sacrifice. Shiva, pleased with the bhakti, descended to earth and cured Ravana. Since Shiva acted as a doctor, he was addessed with the name of 'Vaidya' or Baidya'. And the temple came to be known as Baidyanath or Vaidyanath.
Every year, millions of devotees visit Baidyanath Jyoirlinga to pay their homage to Lord Shiva. Baidyanath Dham is famous for its 'Sharavvan Mela' that is orgainsed in the month of July-August. During the fair, around 7-8 million devotees collects the holy ganges water from Sultangunj and visit the temple to offer it to the deity. Sultangunj is located at a distance of around 105kms from Deoghar. Devotees are known as 'Dak Bam'. An unbrokeable line of people, dressed in saffron colored clothes, stretches over the distance of 104 kms through out the month. The devotees are so deeply involved in the spiritual fervor that they don't even stop for once during their journey from Sultangunj to the Baidyanath temple at Deoghar.
