What is a Mandala

• In sanskrit Mandala means circle and centre.
• The symbolism and esoteric teaching behind the mandala and its expression in form is very complex.
• Its essence is unification, centering and transcendence, and it portrays a dynamic spiritual process that defies verbal description.
• Basically the mandala is a receptacle for the gods and their collection point of universal forces.
• It is a representation of the universe, the infinite and serves as a spiritual guide for men through the cosmic processes of life and death.
• It represents the citadel of enlightenment and could be viewed as being maze through life which men enters into and proceeds through to find the way towards its centre where its eternity recites.

What do Shapes mean?

• Circle: the essence and the whole, the cosmos.
• Square: stability, balance between worlds.
• Hexagon: the union of opposites.
• Labyrinth: personal quest.
• Butterfly: renewal, transformation.

What do colors signify?

• White: Purity.
• Yellow: sunshine and light energy
• Green: nature balance.
• Violet: mysticism, esoteric, spiritual.
• Orange: energy, vitality, creativity.
• Blue: peace, relaxation, tranquility.
• Black: mystery, unknown. 

Roots and Traditions of Mandala

1. In Hinduism and Buddhism the Mandala is used as a symbolic diagram, in sacred rites as well as guide for meditation.But it is Tibet that it has achieved its most complex development.
2. The Mandala of the Tibetan Thangkas(cloth scroll painting) characteristically consists of an outer enclosure around one or more concentric circles.
3. The circles in turn surround transversed  by lines from the centre to the four corners, dividing it into four triangles.
4. A common arrangement of such a mandala places in its centre and middle of each triangle, five circles containing symbol of divinities. Another typical composition depicts a group of deities seated symmetrically around a main central figure. 
5. The border surrounding the mandala are all symbolic in their depiction.The first usually represents a ring of fire that bars entry to the initiated and symbolizes the fire of ignorance.

The concentric circles guiding towards the centre also carry symbolic aspect, many of which are difficult to analyze.

• The circle of diamonds usually stands for illumination,
• The circle of eight graveyards symbolizes the eight aspects of individuating cognition
• The circle of lotus signifies spiritual rebirth and is often depicted enclosing the centerpieces where specific deities are seated. 

The Real Purpose of Mandala

The Purpose is not only to bring your subconsciousness to consciousness .The real purpose is to push your consciousness into subconsciousness so that it becomes an intuition or simply a part of cosmos. It is only then that you are connected to the soul of nature.
